2012 Finals Day - 2nd September
What is that they say ‘a change is as good as a rest’ – well in 2012 we changed how we run the club’s annual tournament.
In years gone by we have held a knock our format where members play matches on their own timetable over the early part of the summer culminating on what has always been a rather fun ‘Finals Day’. However, in recent times and given the ever busier lives we all lead, it has become harder to schedule all those matches. So we took a bold decision to experiment with a different format. In 2012 (and possibly henceforth – depending on feedback) our Finals Day has become a one afternoon tournament where everyone gets to play a series of short matches where every point scored and every point lost counts.
We were rained off in the early part of the summer – what a great surprise! But in September we got to play our tournament. The long and short of it was that 20 or so of us had a great afternoon of competitive tennis intermingled with cups of tea (made with our new 30 litre Urn!), cream teas and cucumber sandwiches. How very English!
The tennis was energetic and sociable and went very well - barring one member’s very painful pulled muscle. To top it all we climaxed with our now traditional HKLTC Club BBQ expertly cheffed by Hugh Anderson. In that same spirit of club tradition our burgers were elegantly washed down with either Harveys or Pimms (in a few cases maybe even both). If you weren’t there you missed a splendid afternoon, if you were there do let us know if we should continue with this format?
